People have mistakenly viewed the law of non-resistance to mean that we should not resist anything that comes our way-we are to be completely passive to the point of becoming a doormat for everyone. That's the precise meaning of co-dependency and definitely not most empowering way to live your life. So, toss that idea out the door right now.
The law of non-resistance means that you are able to process whatever comes your way without becoming enmeshed with negativity or having the knee-jerk response that many people typically use to address a challenge in life. You can't ignore problems and trials, but you don't have to let them drag you down either. Trials and upsets may be seen as the events your soul sets up in order to improve or obtain a particular virtue such as patience. I would much rather my soul learn its lessons in peace and joy rather than through adversity. But, how?
By being non-resistant in the true sense of the word, you acknowledge every circumstance for what it is. If you get a traffic ticket from an officer who claims you did not stop at a red light, you can either get all up in arms, raising your blood pressure and giving away your peace in the process, or you can calmly ask yourself and your spirit guides, "What does this situation have to teach me? Does this officer need my prayers? Is there someone at traffic court who needs my love and light?" The same Universe that sent the police officer into your realm of influence is the same Universe that will provide the money you need to pay the ticket.
On a daily basis, we have the opportunity to be non-resistant even if we are at home where we do not encounter another human being. Take for instance, that voice in your head that says you can't do something. I've adopted the practice of having a short (very short!) dialog with that voice by stating, "I recognize the option you are offering me and I know you are trying to protect me. However, fear is no longer a motivator for me. I live in peace and I trust my Creator to provide everything I need. I'm going forward with my plan." Notice how empowering that response is!
The catch comes in knowing the difference between the voice of your ego and the voice of your higher self. The voice of ego is condemning, critical, judgmental, fear-based, and unreliable--it changes its advice without warning! The voice of Spirit or your higher self is unbiased, wise, kind, encouraging, trustworthy, and consistent. This is your intuition or internal guidance that so many people are afraid to trust. Yet, how many times have you said, "If only I had followed my gut feeling or hunch about such and such."?
You can use this same technique of "allowing" when you encounter unpleasant emotions. Acknowledge that you feel sad, angry, depressed, etc. Perhaps you might journal about what's bothering you. Then, choose to let go of those feelings rather than stewing over them. By doing this, you have processed the emotion rather than ignoring it. (Stuffing your feelings will only give them more power for a grand eruption at a later and more embarrassing date!) This method will not allow the emotion to become part of your identity or rob you of your joy.
Being non-resistant allows you to calmly take a step back from any situation to sum up all your options and then choose the best one. Your higher guidance has a chance to speak when negative emotions are not part of the equation. You will become a conscious co-creator with the divine matrix of which we are all a part.
The mind has a powerful influence over every aspect of your life, including your physical health, finances, and emotions. Whatever you think about, comes about! Why not use your mind to become non-resistant? Use the law of non-resistance to create a more peaceful, empowered life that puts you in control of your circumstances. You will not only remain in control of your emotions, you may soon start noticing that you have fewer and fewer potentially upsetting situations to deal with.
