“Perfection is boring,” she said and then started laughing. The line came in the middle of a conversation where I was sitting on the floor, between two of my clients who were flat on their backs huffing through a difficult Pilates move.
I laughed too and said, “but it’s exquisite for a moment.”
She was referring to the “perfect body” the woman sculpted to within an inch of her life through a combination of hard core exercise, expensive clothing, heavily applied makeup and most likely the help of a surgeon.
I was referring to the moment you perform the uber-hard exercise. When you flow with joy through a posture, realize you’ve attained it and finish the exercise knowing it was beautiful, effortless in it’s fluidity.
Honestly, my Pilates studio doesn’t really have the former, we’re just not that kind of studio. Yes, we have lots of beautiful women and I take partial credit for how they look. But we have a lot of moments where the latter happens, the days with the most are my favorite. I’ll remember the flow of my clients, the focus of my voice, the quiet pride of accomplishment. I love what I do. I love helping my clients achieve those moments.
Instead of chasing the illusion of perfection. A combination of beauty magazine advice, clothing manufacturer marketing and what your Mother told you. Think about finding those moments of perfection, the ones that sneak up on us and strike us with quiet pride, or a gasp of realization, or the shock of their beauty.
My son who smiles up at me with complete love as he wakes in the morning and realizes his Mom is there. The feeling of depletion after a hard run that somehow leaves us sated.Coming out of a meditation moment as a quiet calm washes over you.The amazing aroma that hits you as the oven door opens and that amazing meal reveals itself. The moment of pride as a work project comes to completion and you know it was a slam-dunk.Zipping around on the dance floor in synch with your partner as you boogie to a favorite song.Trying to make yourself perfect is boring, also a lot of time and money and likely to be quite disappointing. But look for those moments, you’ll find them almost every day. One caveat, you need to be out in the world, living your life for those moments to happen. Look for ways to interact …
How do you view perfection? Is it a moment in your life that executed well or is it finally standing in the mirror and seeing those abs you always wanted? Share your perfect moments with us. I’m looking forward to reading them.
