Because the aging process creeps up slowly on us we often take our health and wellness for granted with little awareness of the consequences of the accumulation of negative lifestyle habits that we may have lived with for years or even decades. But if good health is important to us it does not just happen by itself, it is something that must be maintained by us year in and year out if we wish for a high quality of life.
Just existing without being proactive and letting the aging process hit us with its full force without fighting back is not a good option. Sooner or later it will mean we will have to be reactive when our health deteriorates.
Scientists and researchers are slowly beginning to understand the importance of maintaining overall body strength especially as the years pass by. Yet this is the most common thing we fail to do. As many as 8 out of 10 adults do not get enough muscle building and maintaining activity in their lives.
Having good body strength in your 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's and beyond is by far the most important health factor. People fall and break bones because they lack body strength. People become disabled and end up in a wheelchair because they have lost so much strength. People get put into nursing homes because they have lost so much muscle and strength they cannot even do the most basic of everyday self-care necessities.
Go into any nursing home and you will see bright and alert minds still working perfectly but the body has long wasted away. They can still move - if they are strong enough, but when they also lose that little bit of strength they remain confined to a bed.
The majority of health issues and obstacles that prevent us from living a full life as we grow older come from allowing our body strength to evaporate. There is simply not enough muscle strengthening activity left in our modern lives anymore.
Our grandparents would not have needed to go to a gym; back then there was plenty of activity in their lives simply to do the tasks of daily living. But now our lives are 'easy' and 'comfortable' and it is causing us major problems particularly as we get older.
The only way we can combat this is to put an intentional strength training program into our lives and keep it there for life. Just 2-3 sessions each week are needed so only 1-2 hours maximum are required to keep ones body strength in tip-top condition. A bit of effort will be required as it needs to be a challenge to the body.
The lead dominoes of our health are the condition and strength of our muscular system responsible for the vitality of our entire physiological apparatus. If allowed to deteriorate other systems soon follow. On the other hand when strength is maintained all other body systems are maintained as well. Proper strength training exercise is pivotal if you wish to stay well and youthful for longer.
